What to look for

The most important factors when insuring your van boil down to price, cover and what happens if you have to make a claim.
You know what makes a good price but check our page Cover - What will I be covered for?

Cutting the cost

Although skimping on cover could save you money you must balance this with a realistic view on at least part of the reason for buying insurance. Yes, legally you must have motor insurance to drive on the road but if this was all that anybody worried about we'd all stick to Third Party Only cover. Most of us take out Comprehensive cover (or at least Fire & Theft) but some policies restrict what you could claim for to the point where there's no reason in having the cover in the first place. Check our Cover page for details of what to check for.

Other factors that make up your policy

The main things that Insurers rate your premium on are
The Drivers - Any body under 25 or who's had serious claims or convictions is going to get a hard time. Most van insurers will ignore a speeding conviction or two but you still nedd to disclose this when you ask for a quote.

The Weight/ size, Engine and Value of the van as well as the make/ model

Security - Insurance Companies are becoming more accurate on how they rate. For instance, older Ford Transit Vans had very week security and were a mini mecca for thieves (imagine how easy a ram raid is when you can cart the goods off in the same vehicle!). The new model transit has much improved security and the Insurers reflect this in their pricing.

Location, location, location - If you live and drive in a city your premium will be higher. Because insurers get more claims in cities from theft/ vandalism and because a higher number of people on the road makes an accident more likely. Works out well for those that live in the countryside tho!
